Jim Carrey’s New Look Sparks Concern from Fans

Jim Carrey had fans doing a double take after stepping out at the César Film Awards in Paris — and social media wasted no time lighting up with speculation about his dramatically “different” appearance.

The 64-year-old comedy icon, once the elastic-faced king of Hollywood hits like The Mask and The Truman Show, looked noticeably fuller in the face during the rare public outing. But before the internet jumps to extreme conclusions, one top plastic surgeon says the truth may be far less dramatic.

According to triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Raffi Hovsepian, Carrey’s evolving look appears to be more about natural aging than radical cosmetic surgery.

After reviewing recent photos from the February 27 awards show alongside images from 2024, the doctor broke down what fans are really seeing.

Starting with Carrey’s forehead and brow, Dr. Hovsepian says the changes are consistent with “normal male aging” — not surgical tweaks. Around the eyes, he noted mild hollowing and slight skin laxity, both common in men in their 60s. Importantly, he saw no clear signs of a blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery.

“If anything,” he explained, “the changes appear consistent with natural volume loss and dermal thinning.”

So where’s the biggest shift?

According to the doctor, it’s in the midface and cheek area. Compared to earlier appearances, Carrey’s cheeks seem slightly fuller — which could be the result of mild hyaluronic acid fillers or even temporary swelling from a recent volumizing treatment.

“The male midface is ideally flatter and more structural,” Dr. Hovsepian noted. “When fullness increases, it can soften masculine definition.”

As for Carrey’s jawline, the doctor observed some softening compared to his younger years — something he described as extremely common with aging.

Some fans even compared Carrey’s new look to actor Mickey Rourke, whose face has undergone dramatic cosmetic changes over the years. But Dr. Hovsepian was quick to shut down the idea that anything has “gone wrong.”

“I see a man in his 60s with natural structural aging and possibly modest aesthetic maintenance that may read differently under certain lighting conditions,” he said.

If Carrey has had any work done, the surgeon believes it would be conservative — subtle volumizing rather than extreme alterations. Most importantly, he emphasized that Carrey’s face still moves naturally and retains his unmistakable identity.

And that matters.

“The most important principle in male aesthetics is preserving character,” the doctor added. “Jim Carrey’s face still moves naturally and retains identity, which suggests any intervention has been conservative rather than extreme.”

Carrey has largely stepped back from Hollywood in recent years, only returning to the big screen for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, where he plays the eccentric villain Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik. Ironically, fans rarely see his real face in the role thanks to the character’s over-the-top, cartoonish styling — which may explain why his off-screen appearance caught so many people off guard.

In a December 2024 interview, Carrey joked about why he returned to acting after a hiatus.

“I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius. Which is a bit of a stretch,” he quipped. Then, with classic Carrey humor, he added: “I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”

Whether it’s natural aging, subtle maintenance, or simply harsh camera angles under bright Paris lights, one thing is clear — Jim Carrey is still very much Jim Carrey. And even decades later, he’s still got people talking.
