US Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday that a potential US strike on Iran, an option being considered by President Donald Trump, was unlikely to lead to a prolonged war in the region, according to an interview with The Washington Post.
“The idea that we’re going to be in a Middle Eastern war for years with no end in sight — there is no chance that will happen,” Vance said, rejecting criticism that Washington could become drawn into another military conflict in the volatile region if Trump orders air strikes.
Vance, a former US Marine who served in the Iraq War, said: “I think we all prefer the diplomatic option,” and added, “But it really depends on what the Iranians do and what they say.”
Meanwhile, the Trump administration concluded a third round of US-Iran talks on Thursday in Geneva. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the latest round had been “the most intense so far”.
